For the visitor who is making their first trip to China, there
is no finer introduction to the country than this best selling
three week tour, which follows much the same route as our
'Classic China', but with a slightly slower pace, and that
little bit extra depth.
Once again we begin our journey at the
forbidden city, and move on to Xi'an. From here we fly to
Nanjing, the 'Southern Capital', where we can experience
the great size and majesty of China's mightiest river -
the Yangtse. We spend a full day in and around the former
capital before boarding our first Chinese train to Wuxi
on the Grand Canal. After lunch at the picturesque Lake
Tai, we journey back in time with a leisurely cruise along
the 1300 - year - old canal to the enchanting garden city
and silk centre of Suzhou.
We have enough time to enjoy the whole
of the next day in this picturesque town, which Marco Polo
first visited in 1276, from its beautiful gardens to its
fascinating silk houses, and its network of canals.The following
day takes us to Shanghai, where once again we have two nights
to experience the thrill of the former European concession.
This leisurely pattern is repeated in
Guilin and Canton, with two nights in each city, affording
us ample time to visit the most popular as well as the more
unusual sites, before we once again board the express train
for Hong Kong.
